Dierdra - I wish to have video equipment

I wish to have video equipment - Dierdra, 17

“ I wish to have video equipment ”

Dierdra was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when she was an infant. Unfortunately, Dierdra’s older sister, Cassandra is also living with a severe form of Cystic Fibrosis (CF).

Despite feeling like she’s always had someone who understands her daily struggles, Dierdra certainly still battles the feeling of isolation and loneliness due to her condition.

At a young age, she was also diagnosed with Diabetes, directly related to complications with CF, which has made things considerably more difficult for her growing up.

Despite living with two restrictive illnesses, Dierdra still remains positive and active in her daily life. She loves to play basketball and spend time on social media.

She even recently graduated high school and has her sights set on college.

When she initially visited the Wishing Place, she had a good idea of what to expect. Her older sister was a wish kid, too! While brainstorming all the different types of wishes she could possibly have, she narrowed it down to wishing to go to Bora Bora, to meet Billie Eilish, and to have video equipment.

When thinking about what wish would truly mean the most to her, she realized that going somewhere and meeting someone wouldn’t be as impactful to her. She knew in her heat that her wish to have video equipment would allow her to follow her dreams to be a videographer.

“I’m very career-oriented and would not be able to do this by myself for a long time,” said Dierdra.

Dierdra has always been fascinated with photography, video editing and social media content. Her driven attitude, work ethic and creative mindset is the perfect culmination for pursuing her passion.

“I’ve always seen myself involved in video and film in the future,” Dierdra continued. “I have plans and ideas already written down. It would be a dream…”

So, the Wish Fairies got to work to make Dierdra’s wish come to life! They research far and wide about what equipment would allow her to succeed in pursuing her dreams.

When brainstorming, the team thought it would be fitting to have her grand reveal during our 20th Annual Redding Radiothon event in Redding. Her wish would be broadcasted live on the air just before the grand finale as fans listened in.

Then, the day before her live wish reveal, everything changed.

With new measures in place to keep our wish families, team and our entire community safe amid COVID-19, plans needed to be adjusted. The team quickly came up with a plan to ensure that Dierdra’s wish would be granted and that it would be just as special for her had she found out during the Radiothon.

The following day, a team of three wish fairies drove up north to her small town and acted as radio executives from the radio station. Pretending to interview her as they had initially planned, Dierdra had no idea that her wish was about to be granted.

While answering questions about her condition, describing what her most heartfelt wish is and what her wish would mean to her, she was suddenly interrupted by a loud knock and entrance from her front door.

Suddenly, she realized she wasn’t doing just any radio interview and she also wasn’t being interviewed by a radio station. It was at this very moment that her wish came knocking at her door.

In came her Wish Coordinator with a carriage filled with equipment and gadgets, Dierdra’s face lit up with shock and excitement.

Hand-delivered to her was a professional video camera, a tripod, lighting, a microphone, batteries, a flexible mini travel tripod, multiple memory cards for her work, a MacBook Pro for editing, and a backpack to carry all of her gear in.

She couldn’t believe all that was in front of her, for her. Her future was finally at her fingertips!

Her wish was generously granted by her Adopt-A-Wish® sponsor, T & S DVBE INC. She was also provided personal training by Mike’s Camera in Sacramento to give her professional guidance along the way.

Dierdra’s wish is proof that every wish experience is driven by the wish kid’s interests, creativity and personality.

Despite the challenges that we faced, our Make-A-Wish® team banded together to make Dierdra’s most heartfelt wish come to life as promised.
