From the moment that Makayla, 14, stepped foot into The Wishing Place, she knew what her one true wish was.
An avid, and talented musician with a love for pop music, this teenager wanted to be a pop star, and the thought of being able to shoot her own music video was something Makayla was super excited about.
But it hasn’t always been excitement for Makayla in recent years. After receiving a new skateboard from her grandmother, Makayla would fall and break her arm, resulting in a few weeks in a cast. The weeks went by, and still, her arm wasn’t healing correctly, and after another visit to the doctor and additional scans, a tumor was found in the exact place her bone was attempting to heal.
She was diagnosed with Fribromatosis and began chemotherapy treatments at UC Davis Children’s Hospital, where eventually, staff members referred the teen to Make-A-Wish®.
Makayla began her wish journey at the Wishing Place where she considered wishing to have a video camera to record music videos, or to meet her favorite pop-artist whose music helped her through her chemotherapy treatments. Ultimately, Makayla’s passion for singing inspired her true wish; to be a pop star! She imagines having her hair and make-up done for music videos, signing autographs and sharing a positive message with the world!
As soon as her wish was known, UC Davis Children’s Hospital leapt at the chance to be Makayla’s Adopt-A-Wish® partner. She had brought so many smiles to their faces during her treatment with her positive attitude and sunny disposition, that they wanted to see her shine as her wish came true.
So the wish fairies at Make-A-Wish got to work, partnering with KIDZ BOP who provided Makayla a selection of songs to perform, with the teen settling on the song “Best Time Ever”.
Then in spectacular fashion, community partners left-and-right began to line up to ensure she had a spectacular pop star experience. So, a music video shoot, photoshoot and music video premiere was scheduled for the pop sensation!
Her video shoot may have been a long day, but one that would see Makayla blossom. With the help of local children Christian, Eliza, Kenzie, Mattelyn, Leland, Yousef, sister Lily and Wish Kids Jenna and Omar, the energy throughout the music video shoot was amazing, and definitely resulted in one of Makayla’s best times ever.
Her confidence grew with every dance move, every hair flip and every creative thought she took to director Christian and cinematographer Andrew.
Just days later, Makayla came back to Sacramento for a photoshoot with XSiGHT USA, complete with a stylist, hair and makeup team, and of course professional photography services. By the end of her shoot, the entire team said that Makayla was better than most professionals they work with!!
All the meanwhile, the wish team continued to work on making Makayla’s grand finale, her music video debut at UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, a spectacular ending to her experience.
Hundreds showed up, many autographs were signed and the room was transformed into an amazing entertainment space to show her music video to the world for the first time. After a rousing ovation, Makayla took questions from the crowd and then hosted her own afterparty for those in attendance.
The beauty of a wish is that the journey is that it inspires so many. There were a number of community partners who came together to grant Makayla’s wish including:
- ADJ Visuals who directed and produced her music video
- Old Sacramento Waterfront who helped coordinate the video shoot within Old Sacramento
- Lace Salon who provided hair and makeup services to Makayla during her video shoot
- Fat’s Catering who provided craft services and dressing room for Makayla’s shoot and would cater the music video premiere
- Diamond AutoSport for providing an amazing car for Makayla to shoot with and for the ride to her video debut

- All Dolled Up Beauty Hair and Makeup Artistry for providing hair and makeup services during the photoshoot and the video premiere
- Aji Dori Restaurant for providing craft services during her photoshoot
- Bee Love Cookie Co. for making special, custom cookies for Makayla’s video shoot and video premiere
But the most inspiring thing of all was seeing Makayla’s transformation into one of confidence and love. Wishes are life-changing and no-doubt that it positively impacted Makayla’s life and her family.
