At 17 months old, Sophia's parents started to notice changes in her eyes. Soon after that Sophia was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, an eye cancer. She immediately began chemotherapy and displayed good results, but as soon as she would stop chemo treatment the cancer would return. Sophia’s medical team decided to switch her treatment to a systemic chemotherapy. During the process, Sophia’s right eye has remained relatively stable, but her left eye was unresponsive to treatment, and recently had to be removed.
When Sophia was dreaming about what her wish might be, she considered wishing to have a play structure or to become a knight. Sophia’s family uses the ideas of knights and warriors to explain her treatment to her, and to give her extra strength in battling her condition. Ultimately, Sophia decided that she wanted to experience her love of knights and fairy tales at Disney World.
She was thrilled to meet all of her favorite characters, and even had an exclusive meet and greet with Mickey Mouse where the two danced, colored, and played games. “We are grateful beyond words and have a million photos and hours of video footage to serve as reminders of Sophia’s wish,” said her mom, Janai. “This trip was magical. We were blessed enough to see a lot of great sites on this trip, but best of all was our daughters’ week-long smiles.”
